Helldivers 2’s Bold Reforms | Galactic War Campaigns, Planet Warfronts, and a New Ship System Aim to Win Back Players

While Helldivers 2 has seen a surge in popularity since its 2024 release and has received a series of new content updates this year, player reviews have continued to decline. The main reasons are attributed to the lack of innovation in its endgame, the uninteresting Galactic War, and persistent game bugs.

Players have become increasingly disappointed with the game, to the point that its ratings recently plummeted. Fortunately, the game director recently released a blog post revealing some major reforms to the game, which has somewhat won back players' hearts. Let's take a look at these exciting changes.

Galactic War Campaigns

Helldivers 2’s Bold Reforms | Galactic War Campaigns, Planet Warfronts, and a New Ship System Aim to Win Back Players

Let's start with the much-criticized community-driven Galactic War. The studio originally designed this campaign to allow players to experience the impact of individual actions on warfare. However, in reality, it has remained unclear whether community actions truly lead to different outcomes or are merely a gimmick.

Therefore, the studio will launch new Galactic War Campaigns later in June, which they claim is the next evolution of Major Orders. These campaigns will have longer objectives, lasting one to three weeks.

The longer objective duration will better help players understand the content, progress, achievements, and impact of their campaign. Longer campaign durations will also offer richer rewards.

The studio states that these rewards include important items that can directly alter gameplay. Furthermore, they plan to release Fast Recon Vehicle upon completion of the first campaign. These rewards are not only for previously unused items that players had accumulated, but also for attracting returning players.

In addition to the substantial rewards from overall campaign progress, the game has introduced Personal Campaign Progression objectives, replacing the original Personal Orders. These objectives have their own independent reward mechanism.

This way, even if players don't complete the entire longer campaign, they will still receive rewards for their efforts. This move also helps to alleviate conflicts and disagreements among players due to differing objectives. Players no longer need to argue over desired rewards; they can now all obtain their desired Helldivers 2 Super Credits and act separately without affecting overall progress.

Planet Warfronts

Planet Warfronts is a roguelite system that the studio revealed it was developing last December. According to the developers, the system aims to create dynamic battlefronts on planets, requiring players to make collective decisions to liberate them. It will feature three different mission types based on territory control:

  1. Defend missions in liberated territory
  2. Frontline War missions on the frontlines
  3. Behind Enemy Lines missions in enemy-controlled territory

These missions will help achieve different objectives, and the success or failure of these objectives will have different consequences, which is the essence of dynamic battlefronts. For each player, the experience of liberating a planet will vary drastically depending on their individual choices.

Players will fight to capture a key strategic location on a planet, and different locations may spawn different variants of enemies. Achieving the ultimate goal of liberating the planet will also bring about changes to gameplay and consequences. This open-ended gameplay has many fans eagerly anticipating its release.

New Ship & Upgrade System

Super Destroyer is currently the only ship in the game. Although the game offers upgrade modules, almost all players follow the same upgrade path, lacking any personalization options. The studio acknowledged this in its response, stating that the existing module upgrade system doesn't fully utilize the value of modifications. The good news is that this will change in the upcoming update.

The ship upgrade system will be significantly revamped, providing players with more unlockable and personalized options, giving them greater autonomy. Meanwhile, the studio is designing a new ship. Given the establishment of a dedicated design team, it's believed that more ships will be added in the future.

It's revealed that each ship will have its own unique strengths and weaknesses, resulting in unique upgrade paths, specializations, and customizable content. This means that in future games, we might even see two seemingly completely different ships upgraded from the same ship. Ship gameplay will also vary greatly depending on player choices.

Game Experience Optimization

Finally, the studio is also working on improving the game experience. The team-assisted reload mechanic is no longer restricted; it can be used as long as either the carry or the reloader is carrying a matching ammo pack. Regarding the bouncing stratagem stuttering issue, the studio stated that a dedicated team has been formed to address this problem, which is expected to be resolved by the end of the year. The studio is also working on fixing the unresponsive Hellpod Steering issue.

In addition, they have raised the level cap to 300, added emote slots to 8, and optimized the economy and resource systems. Stuttering and environment collision issues when moving on grass and vegetation are being optimized. The appearance of Superstore and Warbond menus has been fixed, making them easier to navigate.

They are using a closed testing system to test these features and are gathering player feedback on game balance and stability through the community's Propaganda Commanders.

As one of the most anticipated games of 2024, Helldivers 2, despite its less-than-ideal past, still retains a considerable player base. With the launch of Galactic War Campaigns and Planet Warfronts, along with the introduction of new ships, will these seemingly player-friendly changes help it return to its former glory? Stay tuned!
