Lord of Hatred Launches Early: Diablo 4's Most Ambitious Expansion Yet

Lord of Hatred, the second expansion for Diablo 4, will officially launch on April 27, 2026 at 4 PM Pacific Time, a day earlier than previously announced. It represents a significant improvement over previous installments in the series, though some minor shortcomings remain.

This article will review the campaign, new content mechanics, and new classes in Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred. Let's take a look at what this new expansion is all about.Lord of Hatred Launches Early: Diablo 4's Most Ambitious Expansion Yet

Expansion Campaign

The relationship between Diablo series and its story campaign has always been somewhat ambiguous. Diablo 4 has deviated from its original trajectory, moving towards a massively multiplayer online game (MMORPG) like World of Warcraft. Its lengthy campaign is scattered across the map, but lacks the driving force of its predecessors. Furthermore, the rewards in terms of experience and loot are relatively limited.

By the time of Diablo 4's first expansion, Vessel of Hatred, this problem had become quite severe. The campaign story became increasingly irrelevant; the game was saturated with other, more instantly gratifying content, and the story was merely an obstacle for players trying to unlock the features they truly wanted.

Diablo 4's second expansion, Lord of Hatred, will officially launch on April 27th (Pacific Time). Its campaign is a significant improvement over Vessel of Hatred, even surpassing the base game. This will be discussed in detail later.

Lord of Hatred's opening cinematic delivers a shocking twist that leaves players breathless. Some iconic characters suddenly appear, while others are killed and seemingly vanished forever. Diablo 4's original antagonist, Demon Mother Lilith, returns as a new and more sympathetic character. Her stunning visuals and Caroline Faber's dignified voice make her even more compelling in the expansion.

At the start of Lord of Hatred, we are still searching for Lilith's father, Mephisto, Prime Evil of Hatred. He now possesses the body of Akarat. We follow him to Amazonian civilization of Skovos, where he is gathering an army of Akarat's adherents. We are swept up in this human torrent, with Akarat priests sacrificing themselves to fight us, transforming into boss monsters.

Lord of Hatred features numerous boss battles, especially later in the game, some of which are truly life-or-death challenges. However, perplexingly, regardless of whether you're early or late in the game, Item drop list for the campaign is far more stingy than almost any other event in the game.

This is the main reason why this massive campaign still feels so tedious. Take my advice: before creating a new seasonal hero, quickly complete the campaign with a well-equipped, high-level character.

New Features

Horadric Cube from Diablo 2 makes a strong comeback. While it doesn't completely replace other ways to upgrade or modify items, it's designed to be a powerful and versatile core to the item system. Horadric Cube offers a wide variety of effects, and its most important function is the ability to upgrade a useless ordinary item into a powerful Diablo 4 Unique. This is a feature I really like, cleverly subverting the endless upgrade cycle of action RPG item systems.

Meanwhile, I also really like Talismans. The focus here is on collecting Talisman sets to obtain set bonuses. While it's not as flexible as Runes system, it's clearer and easier to understand. This system further enhances item customization, making builds for most classes more powerful and flexible.

Overall, Lord of Hatred showcases a clear vision that Diablo 4 has lacked. The reworked skill trees also reflect this, benefiting all classes.

The traditional Diablo map overlay has also returned, allowing you to view the center of the screen directly while riding a horse instead of the minimap, which is incredibly convenient. In contrast, the newly added fishing system seems somewhat out of place. While it appears to be a fun pastime, it's not, as the loot acquisition mechanism from Diablo 4 is also applied to fish acquisition.

Class

Compared to the above, I find the two new classes added to Lord of Hatred more significant. There's not much to say about Paladin; the game design is flawless. However, I have some reservations about Warlocks. First, I think their appearance is overly exaggerated: they wear emo robes, comical goth-metal headgear, sweep across the battlefield with purple summons, unleash raging flames, or entangle enemies with eerie chains.

Second, Warlocks have a strong rock and roll monster style. Mechanically, I feel they fall somewhere between the two existing classes in Diablo 4, Sorcerer and Necromancer. They're like flamboyant sorcerers, but you can't summon a large number of minions like Necromancer or Witch Doctor in Diablo 3. This might disappoint some players, as it's far less impressive than the portrayal of Warlock in Diablo 2.

However, aside from these minor flaws, Diablo 4 Lord of Hatred is a content-rich and well-made expansion that has the potential to surpass all previous expansions. Let's look forward to April 27th and hope the game developers can do even better, living up to the expectations of so many players over the past few days.
